Metro and railway work splits cleanly into two problems that have almost nothing in common: a depot floor, where the load is the whole question, and a station concourse, where the load is easy and the access is the whole question.
We design the joint schedule from your drawings, manufacture the systems in India and install them with our own trained crews — one contract and one point of responsibility, rather than a trader supplying profiles and leaving the fixing to whoever is on site.
Depot floors and station concourses are two different specifications
A depot floor takes axle loads, not foot traffic
Rolling stock, maintenance vehicles and lifting equipment put loads across a depot floor joint that ordinary building joints are simply not rated for. This is the most common mis-specification we see on metro work — a building-grade joint carried across from the station block onto the depot drawing. On the DMRC and Charkop depot work the load rating came first and everything else was chosen around it.
A working station never shuts
At Egmore the joint went in through a concourse that stayed open throughout: continuous footfall, luggage and porter trolleys crossing the line all day, and a work front available only in short possessions. What decided the detail was that it could be installed and handed back section by section, trafficable at the end of each window. The movement rating was never the difficult part.
Repeated dynamic loading is what loosens fixings
Both environments deliver cyclic dynamic load rather than static load — vehicles in a depot, crowds and trolley wheels on a concourse, and vibration from the track in both. Cyclic loading works mechanical anchors loose over years in a way that a static load never will. Anchorage type, embedment and edge distance are design decisions here, and they need to be inspectable after installation rather than buried.
These are long structures with a lot of joint metres
Station buildings, concourses and depot sheds are long and low, which is the plan geometry that generates the most movement joints per square metre of floor. The commercial risk is not the rate — it is an incomplete schedule. A location missed at tender becomes a variation, and on a station redevelopment the missed locations are almost always the wall and ceiling returns and the transitions at the platform edge.
Approval regimes decide what gets installed
Railway and metro work runs through client approval and third-party inspection, and material submittals are checked against the specification rather than against the drawing. Where the specification names a movement class and a test standard, a substitution has to demonstrate equivalence and usually cannot. Where it names only a width, it will be substituted.
Typical systems on this work: MegAtec 340 for trafficked and load-bearing floors, MegAtec 610 for wider gaps and heavier duty, MegAtec 360 for wall and ceiling returns, and SeismAtec 450 where blocks are structurally separated. The right answer depends on the gap, the movement class, the traffic and the location — send drawings and we will name it per location.
