In Chennai the corrosion detail outranks the movement calculation
Seismic zone and annual temperature range are what actually set the movement a joint has to absorb. Chennai sits in Zone III under IS 1893 — the moderate band — with an annual swing of roughly 20 °C to 40 °C.
The narrowest thermal swing of any Indian metro
Chennai runs roughly 20 °C to 40 °C — a range near 20 K, under half of Delhi’s. The same 40 m bay moves less than half as far here. That sounds like an easy problem and is usually mis-read as one: a narrower gap leaves proportionally less room for the construction tolerance that shows up on every site, so the calculated width has less margin in it, not more.
Salt air attacks the fixings, not the profile
Marine exposure is the governing durability case within a few kilometres of the coast. Mill-finish aluminium handles it well — it passivates. What corrodes is the fastener and the anchor: a carbon-steel screw in a coastal slab will bleed and lose section long before the extrusion shows anything. Specify the fixing schedule with the same care as the profile, and say so in the BOQ rather than leaving it to site.
The rain arrives in the wrong season for most specifications
Chennai takes most of its rainfall from the northeast monsoon in October to December, not the southwest monsoon the rest of the country designs around. Programmes written to a national monsoon calendar put podium and terrace joints in the ground at exactly the wrong time, and the 2015 floods showed what a basement joint terminated in a hurry does afterwards.
A live station concourse is an install problem before it is a product problem
At Egmore the joint had to go in through a station that never closed. Heavy continuous footfall, luggage and trolley wheels crossing the line all day, and a work front available in short possessions. What decided the detail was a flush trafficable surface that could be handed back section by section, not the movement rating.
Typical systems on Chennai work: MegAtec 340 and 370 for the floors, MegAtec 360 for wall and ceiling returns, and FlexAtec 1200 where a run has to stay sealed against wind-driven rain. The right answer depends on the gap, the movement class, the traffic and the location — send drawings and we will name it per location.
