Expansion joints in Ahmedabad
3 projects — 2 completed, 1 in progress
Ahmedabad is an unusual combination and it catches specifications out. Seismically it is only moderate. Thermally it is one of the harder markets in the country, and the daily swing does more damage than the seasonal one.
We design the joint schedule from your drawings, manufacture the systems in India and install them with our own trained crews — one contract and one point of responsibility, rather than a trader supplying profiles and leaving the fixing to whoever is on site.
Thermally severe, seismically moderate — and the two get confused
Seismic zone and annual temperature range are what actually set the movement a joint has to absorb. Ahmedabad sits in Zone III under IS 1893 — the moderate band — but with a thermal swing closer to the north — with an annual swing of about 12 °C to 42 °C.
Zone III, not Zone IV — and the difference is money
Ahmedabad sits in Zone III under IS 1893, the moderate band, alongside Kolkata and Chennai rather than Delhi. On most buildings here the seismic case does not govern the joint, and a Class III seismic system specified by reflex — usually because the drawing was carried over from an NCR project — is money that would do more work in the waterproofing and the fixing schedule.
But the thermal swing is northern, not western
The annual band runs about 12 °C to 42 °C — roughly 30 K, half again what Chennai sees. An identical bay accumulates around 50% more thermal movement here than on the coast. Ahmedabad is the clearest case in our record of a city where the thermal calculation sizes the joint and the seismic one does not, which is the reverse of the assumption most schedules start from.
The daily cycle is the fatigue case
What is genuinely distinctive here is the diurnal range. In the dry months a 15 to 18 K swing inside a single day is ordinary. Seasonal movement is one cycle a year; a diurnal swing of that size is several hundred cycles a year, and it is cyclic movement rather than peak movement that works fixings loose, fatigues a sealant and starts the rattle in a badly bedded cover plate. It is why we would rather see a mechanically anchored system here than an adhesive-dependent one.
2001 is still the reason Gujarat specifies the way it does
Ahmedabad is roughly 250 km from the epicentre of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake and still lost multi-storey buildings, because the Sabarmati basin alluvium amplified what arrived. The lesson was not that the zone was wrong — it was that soft ground and poor detailing turn a moderate zone into a severe one locally. Where two blocks of different height or foundation meet, get the separation calculated rather than assumed, even in Zone III.
Pharma and industrial floors answer to a different brief
The Zydus work was a manufacturing environment, not an office. Those floors are washed down, take wheeled and chemical load, and cannot have an open gap or a raised lip anywhere a trolley crosses. The deciding requirement is a flush, sealed, cleanable surface that survives daily wet cleaning — a specification most commercial joint details do not meet, and one that has to be written before tender because it cannot be retrofitted.
Typical systems on Ahmedabad work: MegAtec 340 for trafficked floors where the thermal range is doing the work, MegAtec 370 for lighter internal runs, MegAtec 360 for wall and ceiling returns, and FlexAtec 1200 where a run has to stay sealed. The right answer depends on the gap, the movement class, the traffic and the location — send drawings and we will name it per location.

Other markets
We work nationally from Delhi. These are the markets where the project record is deepest — each page lists the buildings, the clients and what local conditions do to the joint design.
